A Mentor is a Good Thing

By Timothy Crawford

You don't get to be old being no fool! The first time I heard that statement I laughed so hard tears came to my eyes. It's true that there's a lot of older folks who make some silly mistakes. Yes, the over 30 club has a few members that could use a good talking to, but most of the time, with age comes wisdom.

If youre 16, you know more about life than you did when you were 12.
If youre 22, you know more about life than you did when you were 16.
If youre 30, you know more about life than you did when you were 22.

Thats just how life works.

If theres an older person in your community that you respect or admire ask him or her to be your mentor. Ask for tips, advice or just for someone to talk things over with. Will that mentor have all the answers to every question, problem or issue that you might have? Probably not, but they may have some suggestions. Its not about someone controlling your life or telling you what to do, its about getting tips on what moves to make. Everyone can use a mentor.

Many of the people that you admire had mentors and coaches:

Puffy had a mentor. Michael Jordan had a coach. Venus Williams had a coach. Barack Obama had a mentor. Denzel Washington had a mentor. Hillary Clinton had a mentor. Its not easy making your way in the world. Things will come up that will throw you for a loop. When you get thrown for a loop talk to people that you respect, such as; counselors, teachers, pastors, neighbors, etc. Dont hesitate to ask. Its okay if you dont know it all. Whats not okay is if you give up. Never give up. Get help.
